Um actually, its more popular than you think it is. It just depends on where you go. If you go around a hockey city, then its quite popular. Even around the AHL teams its still pretty popular. You, sir, have been deemed incorrect.
The only reason its declined though is because of the lockout. That's the only reason why ESPN won't play hockey games. Because of the lockout. The lockout cancelled the deal the NHL had with ABC/ESPN which is why they are stuck on the OLN for now. Get them back on a major market and it will get better.

A lot of high schools offer hockey as a sport and most kids take it up and play it. Like I said before, if you were from America, you would know this.
